Abstract

Firefighters play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and protection of the community, facing high-risk situations and physical challenges daily. In the Paute Fire Department, operational technical personnel are exposed to a significant workload, characterized by long shifts, extreme physical efforts, and constant exposure to stress factors. This research analyzed the influence of workload on the physical and mental health of operational technical personnel in the Paute Fire Department. A mixed methodology was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Structured surveys were conducted among the firefighters to measure stress levels, fatigue, and physical symptoms, in addition to in-depth interviews to understand their personal experiences and perceptions regarding their overall well-being. The results showed that the high workload generated chronic fatigue, musculoskeletal disorders, and sleep disturbances among the firefighters. Moreover, high levels of stress and anxiety were observed, exacerbated by continuous exposure to emergency situations. The lack of psychological support and the intensity of the work negatively impacted their general well-being, making it more difficult to cope with the increasing demands of the job. In conclusion, it was determined that the workload has had a significant impact on both the physical and mental health of the firefighters, highlighting the urgent need to implement preventive policies and psychological support programs. Recommendations included optimizing shift distribution, improving access to medical care, and establishing strategies to reduce stress impacts. This study provided relevant scientific evidence to improve working conditions and occupational safety for operational technical personnel in the Paute Fire Department.
